Dusk

ORGANIC RARE MATCHA
SOURCE: GOKASE, MIYAZAKI, JAPAN

Dusk is an exceptionally rare and organic matcha, and is made from a single cultivar, Okumidori. Where most high-quality matcha relies on careful blending of cultivars to achieve balance, this tea stood out so clearly in its singular form that the blenders chose to let it shine on its own. The result is concentrated, with a depth that reveals itself best in koicha (thick tea). Its scarcity and difficulty of production make it a matcha for rare and intentional moments.

Producing organic matcha of this caliber is challenging – without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, farmers rely on the natural strength of the plants, rich soil, and misty highland climate to nurture leaves of exceptional quality. At over 600 meters above sea level, the cool air and dramatic temperature shifts slow growth, building complexity and sweetness into every leaf.

Origins

Miyazaki is Japan’s fourth-largest tea-growing region, yet remains little known compared to Uji or Kagoshima. In Gokase, tea culture dates back to the 1600s, and the area is now recognized as a World Agricultural Heritage site. The terroir consists of volcanic ash soils, mountain water, and a cool climate, yielding teas with fragrance and clarity that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Flavor Notes

Toasted seaweed, berries, butter. Dense umami and velvety mouthfeel, with layered sweetness, a lingering green depth, and remarkable smoothness. Best prepared as koicha, where its intensity can be experienced fully.
