Tempo

Classic Matcha
SOURCE: KYOTANABE, KYOTO, JAPAN

Tempo is our foundation for matcha – steady, balanced, and versatile. Its flavor is smooth and full, with delicate sweetness and a touch of earthiness, making it just as enjoyable whisked straight as it is in a latte.

This tea is crafted under the guidance of Hiroshi Kobayashi, a renowned tea appraiser and blender whose family has cultivated tea in Uji since 1827. With his hand, Tempo becomes more than a daily standard; it’s a reflection of Uji’s centuries-old matcha tradition, shaped by volcanic soil, river mist, and the quiet, but steady rhythm of careful farming and artful blending.

Origins

This matcha comes from Kyotanabe in Kyoto Prefecture, just southwest of Uji – the birthplace of Japanese matcha. Kyotanabe is part of what we lovingly call the “tea cradle,” a patchwork of towns and villages that together make up the famed Uji growing region. Tea has been cultivated here for centuries, and the combination of rich volcanic soil, clear rivers, and cool mountain air creates leaves with exceptional depth. The result is a tea that carries both the weight of history and the distinct character of its land.

Flavor Notes

Spring grass and cocoa. Balanced sweetness and umami, good aroma, and light astringency. This tea is a field blend primarily made with the tea cultivar Yabukita.
