ORGANIC DARK ROAST HOJICHA
SOURCE: WAZUKA, KYOTO, JAPAN

Canyon is our dark-roasted organic hojicha, a tea that carries the warmth of fire and earth. Its character is mellow yet deep, with toasty sweetness and a rich, woodsy finish. Comforting, smooth, and aromatic.

This tea is produced in Wazuka, a historic tea village in Kyoto’s Uji region, by the Nakai family – pioneers of organic tea cultivation. For over 350 years, the Nakais have tended tea fields here, and since the 1980s, they’ve led Japan in natural farming, working in balance with the mountains and soil. Today, that tradition continues, with a clear commitment to sustainability and craft.

Origins

Wazuka lies in the heart of Uji, long considered one of Japan’s most celebrated tea-growing regions. With rolling hills, fertile volcanic soils, and rivers that carry mist across the valleys, the area is perfectly suited for tea cultivation. Hojicha itself was born in nearby Kyoto in the 1920s, when merchants roasted leftover leaves and stems over charcoal. What began as resourcefulness quickly became beloved for its caramel-like aroma and gentle, roasted sweetness.

Flavor Notes

Toasted grains, cedar, campfire. Smooth, lightly sweet, and grounding, with no bitterness and a lingering roasted finish. This tea is made from the cultivar Yabukita.
